Monasterio de Sant Joan de les Abadesses

Monasterio de Sant Joan de les Abadesses

I fell in love with the sound of Medieval music in 1979 when I toured Spain for three months, performing 12-16th century music in 800 year old cathedrals in Catalunya. This Medieval suite for guitar is the result of much love and adoration of the pure melodies and harmonies of that period: five original pieces with two arrangements of authentic medieval music, Imperayritz from the Llibre Vermell and a Cantiga de Santa Maria. The first movement, Montserrat, was featured in Issue #58 [July 2005] of Fingerstyle magazine.

Two musicians from the Cantigas de Santa Maria

from the Cantigas de Santa Maria

Montserrat is dedicated not just to the famous pilgrimage site west of Barcelona, but also to the actual pilgrimage Trio LiveOak made there in 1979. We were privileged to have a private viewing of the Llibre Vermell (Red Book) which contains Imperayritz, a hymn or dance of praise to the Virgin Mary, and 13 other important musical examples of 14th century Catalonia, now the northeast region of Spain. Abadesses is a memory of another phenomenal 12th century site, the cathedral at Sant Juan de les Abadessas [see photo below]. Loor means ‘praise’ in Gallego-Portuguese, the poetic language King Alfonso X, “El Sabio,” preferred for his large and magnificent collection of over 400 Cantigas de Santa Maria of the 13th century. Santa Maria Valed is one of the few songs thought to have actually been written by Alfonso when he was ill and in need of his precious Saint Mary’s aid. The suite concludes with an Estampie, a medieval dance form that features many sections not unlike the rondo form of later centuries. This particular one is modeled after the Robertsbridge Estampies, the earliest examples of written keyboard music.

Harlequin in Love is a collection of five pieces in E. Written at separate times, the pieces came together through performances and seemed to tell a story. That story line ,and thus the titles, emerged from the pieces themselves. I have played the fool in a staged commedia del arte performance called The Lost Spindle. Perhaps I have played it in real life as well, I’ll let my friends and family determine that – but haven’t we all!

I. He Fools
II. He Pines
III. He Loves
IV. On the Sol, in Mi
V. He Flees

On the Sol, in Mi is a pun referring to the G-string of the guitar, on which most of the melody is played, and the song is in the key of E Major. It is conceived along the lines of my other Single String Studies. He Pines involves a long section of a left hand alone ostinato with melodies in harmonics or pressing the frets with the i finger of the right hand while plucking with the a finger.

The following video was made for Aaron Green’s Vintage Classical Guitars with a 1911 Vicente Arias guitar from his shop. Recording date was 11-2-2015 at a secret and special location in southern VT.

From the Windy Place was written for my first son Gus whose life began in the northwestern province of Galicia, Spain. The Pilgrim’s Road is one of life, Sand and Sky are the beach on which life is discovered and In the Shadow of the Church is a pensión next to the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, a spiritual home for my soul. Finally, The Gift is the birth of Gus. The Windy Place is the rough and steep coast of Spain north of Santiago de Compostela where I traveled with my wife after Trio LiveOak gave a concert for the festival Musica en Compostela in the summer of 1982. It was magical and our first son’s name, Nathan [“gift” in Hebrew] Guthrie [“from the windy place” in Gaelic], is a remembrance of that time.

This video includes a brief discussion of my compositional style, then a live performance of Dreams on a Lullaby on a 1931 Hauser guitar.

Dreams on a Lullaby, written in the fall of 2006, is based on the Catalan folk song arranged by Miguel Llobet, Noi de la Mare, and made famous by Andres Segovia. A sweet and luscious song in 6/8, the theme travels through major and minor versions that often interweave and conflict with each other with a surrealism reminiscent of the painter Dalí.

Translation of “El Noi de la Mare”??? The Son of Mary
What shall we give to the Son of the Virgin?
What can we give that the Babe will enjoy?
First, we shall give Him a tray full of raisins,
Then we shall offer sweet figs to the Boy.
First, we shall give Him a tray full of raisins,
Then we shall offer sweet figs to the Boy.

Débil del Alba (Tenderness of the Dawn) was conceived as a duet for guitar and dancer. After hearing my son, Adam Wallace, play a very tender and moving Villa-Lobos Prelude #4 at the end of his freshman year at Skidmore College, he requested I write something for him and his girlfriend to perform together. And so I wrote this piece for him and dancer Jessyca Dudley later that summer of 2003. Sadly, they broke up and he stopped playing the guitar soon after – so much for Dad getting involved! The title comes from a poem by Pablo Neruda which Jessyca chose. Lyrical melodies in the first and third sections contrast with an agitated, impressionistic middle section composed in a whole tone scale. It ends in a very peaceful return to G Major.

This video of our 2010 trip to Taxco, Mexico for the 13th International Guitar Festival run by Juan Carlos Laguna features Débil del Alba as background music.

Passing in the Night is five short movements dedicated to my father. It was written in Würzburg Germany August 15-18, 2012 while I was on a composition retreat after 13 concerts in Spain. Anxious to write in general and specifically to fulfill a commission for the Beatty Youth Competition, I did not expect to receive notice that my 94 year old father had a fever and had stopped eating. The words of Amanda, a shape note hymn by Justin Morgan, still resounded in my ears from a magical performance in the Romanesque San Martín de Frómista: “Death like an overflowing stream sweeps us away, our life’s a dream, an empty tale, a morning flower, cut down and withered in an hour.”

The five works encompass various styles, influenced by my travels through several countries and by my father’s love of travel. The first, ‘Round the World, is a homage to the fabulous Bulgarian composer/guitarist Atanas Ourkouzounov who I had visited recently. The second, Don’t say Goodbye recalls the stark harmonies and gracious melodies of Justin Morgan and the American shape note school. The titles of 2,3 and 5 are quotes from my father during my last visit. Dad told us of his recent [imagined] trip “round the world.” A few months earlier he would have elaborated greatly in detail, exotic surely. But as his body weakened from eleven years of struggle, his mind, or perhaps just his voice, couldn’t illumine the imagined trip. I think he would have been excited to visit Bulgaria. On parting Dad said, “Don’t say good-bye [#2], say au revoir [#4]; I’m still your Pappy! [#5]”

Par 9 [#3] evokes his impossible dream of joining the pro golf circuit at age 90. Or rather, it is the feeling in me of how odd it was to feel happy that he had dreams, yet sad that he was so divorced from reality. Which is better? Joyous dancing and love of life infuse the the last two pieces, celebrating a life well lived. Au revoir Pop!

Here is a video made in Slovenia at the end of my October 2016 tour with Uros Baric at Barič Studios. Uros is very easy to work with, gracious and welcoming and most of all, very professional.

Un Establo de Oro

This playlist includes several works from the collection “For Federico”: Epitafio a un Pájaro; Sombra para mis Gritos; La Perla del Pico; for narrator and guitar De la Muerte Oscura, and finally Un Establo de Oro.

For Federico

Un Establo de Oro was written in a frenzy over musical ideas I have been entranced with for the past year since writing Epitafio a un Pájaro. I used a system of deriving pitches from the names of Federico García Lorca and the dedicatee, Linda Marsella. Both diatonic and chromatic versions of their names were created, as well as harmonic and melodic versions. The result has given me inspiration for five pieces now: Epitafio a un Pájaro; Sombra para mis Gritos; La Perla del Pico; De la Muerte Oscura, and finally Un Establo de Oro.

While writing another work based on the same motivic material, I listened to a CD of the Ourkouzounov Ensemble, whom I have long admired. The sounds of this particular instrumentation (flute, cell and two guitars) grabbed me and I knew another new piece had to be written for my “For Federico” set of music. The title (A Stable of Gold) comes from the poem De la Muerte Oscura (Gacela #7) by García Lorca and is one of the more enigmatic images of that work. Is that the core fascination of Lorca — his stream of conscious connection of one image to another that we relate to, but don’t know why?!

Mare Duo CD of mandolin and guitar

Mare Duo on the cover
of “Crystal Tears” CD on Trekel

The Coming of Arthur was written for the Mare Duo, Annika Hinsche [Luckebergfeld], mandolin and Fabian Hinsche, guitar, in early summer 2009 at a beautiful home on Cape Cod. The Duo had requested that I write a piece with a literary theme to fit a “concept” album they were creating. We tossed around many ideas and finally I stumbled on the poem of this name by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. While the form of the poem seemed difficult to me, the passion, and dynamic inspired me. I did not realize until afterward how my love of medieval music infuses the work – appropriately.

I have borrowed some musical material from my song Rain, Rain and Sun from The Great Deep. I do not like to think harmonically – so many of my harmonies result from melodic and textural work. As the poem constantly goes back and forth between hope and despair, the work alternates dissonant dialogue with consonant dance and song. Arthur comes to a land that has been torn by unrest and disorder. The land is rife with beasts and the people have lost control of their homeland. As we all know, the story ends with hope.

I want to thank both Denise Sullivan for the use of her gorgeous home and gardens and August Watters for loaning me an exquisite mandolin. You can read more at my blog about the creation of this piece.
