Elemental FANMAIL

“The music is incredible and the versatility of musical styles and genres is incredible. Your synthesis of style is remarkable… I felt transported to the world of Albeniz, de Falla and Montsalvatge one minute and another I was in a new and unknown realm.
—Orlay Alonso, Seconda Prattica

An epic work.  This album signifies not only a major musical statement by Composer Frank Wallace, but a much needed sonic statement by Guitarist Frank Wallace.   Elemental delightfully demonstrates what a master guitarist can do with a seemingly unlimited tonal palette.”
Aaron Green, Luthier

Your CD is mind blowing… Your evolution as a composer and player continues to astound me.  Your playing is immaculate.  The guitar sounds magnificent.
—David Isaacs, professor of guitar

The music is definitely elemental — powerful and poetic!”
—Jonathan Richmond, writer and music critic

“I’m just now listening to your new CD Elemental. God it is good!!!  Really – it is just a terrific combination of composition, performance and recording. Oh and the art work’s not bad either!”
Mark Davis, Director of New American Mandolin Ensemble

Elemental arrives

Dear Friends,
I am thrilled to announce my new CD Elemental, the long-awaited volume III of my own new works, is now available at Gyre Music, CDBaby and Strings-by-Mail; and as MP3 downloads at iTunes, Amazon, and Naxos. This album (other than my two sons!) is the most important creation of my life; it is a pure statement of my soul and spirit. The music was written within the last 10 years and contains elements of all my musical experiences, alchemically fused together. Thanks to my late dear friend Edmund Brelsford and his wife Veronica, I was able to record this very special moment on an incredible 1931 Hauser guitar that was built for Andrés Segovia, who in turn gave it to his student Blanche Honegger Moyse.  She eventually brought it to Brattleboro VT where I first encountered it in the hands of Edmund in the mid-1990’s. Enjoy!   —Frank

Frank Wallace – Producer

With the help of our indomitable new assistant Heather Lawless, Gyre applied for a Copland Recording grant last week. I have been in the business of producing recordings for nearly 20 years, and closely involved with the process before that, but I had never written a proper bio of myself in this context. I’m proud of my work for Gyre, so here it is:

Frank Wallace has produced, recorded, edited and mastered eight CDs and three EPs for Gyre Music since 1997. His skills were developed through close observation and participation in all earlier recordings of Duo LiveOak and his solos with Titanic Records and Centaur, the 1994 “Lanterns of Fire” with John Newton and Antonio Oliart of Sound Mirror in Boston, and Christopher Greenleaf who produced and engineered “Schubert and Mertz”. In addition to creating his own recordings, he has recorded and edited several CDs for other guitarists and ensembles. His interest in the process developed from a passion for sound and the art of transferring the live experience of beautiful acoustics to recorded media. Learning the hard way after a long trip to Spain in 1990, Wallace was horrified to hear the pale image of his music recorded by a professional engineer in a Romanesque church. This disappointment led to the purchase of professional equipment and 10 years of study before his first CD was released in 2000. Wallace is committed to crafting the image of his own music on recorded media whenever possible. He is now using this skill in a series of videos of rare vintage guitars for Vintage Classical Guitars of Groton, MA.

Best Wishes to All, Frank

The Five Zero Hartt Project

I began thinking about “chamber symphony” several years ago somewhat after the fact. I had written an extended 3 section song called Epitafio a un Pájaro for voice, flute, and 2 guitars. Sometime after it was done I was compelled to write another piece using the same motivic ideas – they were based on the name of the poet of Epitafio, Federico García Lorca. This was Un Establo de Oro for two guitars, flute and cello.  La Perla del Pico for flute and guitar quartet, a guitar duo called Sombra para mis Gritos and finally a piece for narrator and guitar, De la Muerte Oscura, followed. I had written a small “chamber symphony” without knowing it!

I was left with the desire to “do it again.” Perhaps with more intention, as the first time I had no idea that I was going to go so far. My ensuing proposal to several ensembles in the Hartford area, with the steadfast support of Richard Provost and the Hartt School, led to the Hartt Five Zero Project, a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Guitar Department with five local ensembles participating. The Augustin Foundation has generously supported the commission of seven works for the following groups to be performed on April 12, 2012 at the Hartt School in Hartford. CT: Phenix Ensemble: Richard Provost, guitar; Anton Miller, violin; Rita Porfiris, viola Pandora Duo: Christopher Ladd, guitar; Janet Arms, flute New England Guitar Quartet: Nick Cutroneo; Jeremy Milligan; Daniel Hartington; Christopher Ladd  Alturas Duo Scott Hill, guitar; Carlos Boltes, viola and charango  Kaleidos: Yovianna Garcia, voice and guitar: Sayun Chang, voice and percussion.

The world celebrates the 100th anniversary of the incomparable Benjamin Britten on November 22, 2013. In honor of the event Gyre is pleased to announce the release of A Heavy Sleep. The work is a 4:30 fantasy commissioned by and written for German guitarist Detlev Bork by Frank Wallace. The world premiere was given November 9, 2013 by Detlev at Kammermusiksaal der Musik- und Singschule Heidelberg, Germany. The title and motivic content of the piece were derived from Britten’s monumental work Nocturnal from 1963.

Please support our work by not sharing PDFs or MP3s with friends – send them to our site instead – only you have the right to print from the PDF.
  • The new Video page features performances of Gyre publications; each title has a link to the sheet music if you want to learn more or purchase; send us your video of works by Frank Wallace to include on the page.
  • There is audio and video on product pages when possible; some audio is a midi file from Finale / Garritan Personal Orchestra. Although this program does an incredible job (with a little dynamics etc. tweaking by the composer), we need YOUR help to keep updating the listening experience with live performances.

SUSTAINING POWER writing for winds

art work on the cover of The BellsEnter CMSALE in the Promo Code box at checkout for a 25% discount on all chamber music until November 1, 2013

The day I walked into San Francisco Conservatory of Music, I was challenged to become a melodist, to think beyond the guitar. That’s a fancy way of saying that I was forced to take voice lessons in order to make it through sight-singing class – yes, my voice was that bad. I was extremely shy in high school and had never dared sing and mostly mumbled in public (and, of course, with my parents!)

By the end of college I was singing with Jon Bailey in the Cantata Singers, a semi-professional choir housed at the Conservatory. Jon was a true inspiration and that changed my life! Moving to Boston on graduation, I joined the Quadrivium and eventually formed the LiveOak Consort which featured a mix of voices and instruments. I have continued that mix to this day, though it has become focused on the creation of art song with guitar. So most of my melodic self has gone into this creative process, regularly working with winds or strings as well, but always in the context of guitar ensemble. Lurking in my mind has been the desire to write for larger ensembles of sustained instruments or voices. In September this year I finally took the time to “arrange” The Bells for wind quintet. I say “arranged,” but it feels more like a realization of what is already on the page. It was a fairly straight-forward process. It is such glory to hear a five note guitar chord have the sustaining power of five sets of lungs and the implied voice leading be clearly heard by the distinctive voices of wood and metallic wind instruments.

Listen to the Finale Garritan Personal Orchestra version of the pieces, see sample pages of the score or watch me play one of the guitar versions on the product page on this site: The Bells for winds

I am looking for a wind quintet to give the debut performance. Any ideas or contacts would be greatly appreciated.
